Chris Newman is one of Britain's leading acoustic guitarists
and a prolific composer and arranger. He began to play the guitar at
the age of four, spent his childhood playing folk music then dabbled in
the jazz scene in his teens (playing with and learning from such
luminaries as Stephane Grappelli, Diz Disley and Denny Wright). He
spent many years with a variety of acoustic bands, producing a eclectic
body of recorded material culminating in the release of two solo albums
in the early eighties. He then became sidetracked into the commercial
music world - collecting a silver disc for producing The Oldest
Swinger
in Town. One day in 1985, he decided
he'd really rather play interesting music than pursue interesting pay
cheques and thereafter became immersed in the traditional music of
Ireland and Scotland. In 1988, he started working with Irish harper
Maire Ni Chathasaigh, since then they've played in 21 countries on five
continents. He guested with the Boys of the Lough on their Day Dawn
album in 1994 and toured with them for almost three years.
