Marathon Recording

Daniel Protheroe and Matthew Gephart, our sound engineers, dove into their recording projects the moment the studio was ready to go. Between sessions, Matt managed to whip up the following account of those who came to record in the new, improved Sage Arts studio.

Take it away, Matt:

It has been a busy year in the studio at Sage Arts. Most of winter and spring were spent in building reconstruction, recovering from the flood of November 2003.

By May, the music resumed with Flowmotion working on their upcoming album release. Band members include Josh Clauson (guitar and lead vocals), Jesse Kansanback (bass and vocals), Don Goodwin (keyboards), Scott Goodwin (drums and vocals), and Bob Rees (percussion).

During June and July, Fred Forssell and Laurie Lewis produced the upcoming release from Leah Larson. This album includes Ron Stuart and Candy Goldman playing banjo, Dale Adkins playing guitar, Jeff Smith playing mandolin, and Dee Ann Davidshofer playing bass. Mike Marshall and Todd Phillip also appear on this album, but were recorded in the bay area. June also marked the completion of the new Mike Merrifield album “Butterfly Keep” produced by Orville Johnson.

Bob and Maggie Iverson recorded their album “Key Notes Plus” in late July.

In August, John Reischman and the Jaybirds recorded and mixed their upcoming album release. Guitar player and vocalist Jim Nunally produced the album. John Reischman played mandolin and sang harmony vocals. Trisha Gagnon played bass and sang lead and harmony vocals. Nick Hornbuckle played banjo. Greg Spatz played fiddle.

In October, The Masters of Scottish Arts mixed the upcoming release of their 2004 Benaroya Hall concert.

The first week of November, Tom Ball and Kenny Sultan recorded their upcoming album release for Taxim/No Guru Records. This album is co-produced by Daniel Protheroe, Tom Ball, and Kenny Sultan.

In late November, Lorin Grean started recording her third album with Sage Arts. Lorin Grean played Celtic harp and sang. Gerry O’Beirne played guitar. Marley’s Ghost has been hard at work with producer Van Dyke Parks on their upcoming album release. The numerous musicians involved include the usual band members Ed Littlefield, Jr., Dan Wheetman, Jon Wilcox, and Mike Phelan. Also appearing on this album are Don Heffington, Hutch Hutchinson, Buell Neidlinger, Cary Black, Keith Lowe, Bill Frisell, Dan Marcus, Jay Thomas, and Phil Salazar.
